Reviving the World Cyber Games: A Design Triumph

Designer Kenneth Nienhuser's Innovative Approach to the Global eSports Festival

The World Cyber Games 2019 Xi'an, designed by Kenneth Nienhuser, emerged as a beacon of innovation in eSports event design. This article explores the unique design elements, inspirations, and challenges that shaped this award-winning event.

The design of the World Cyber Games 2019 Xi'an was inspired by the event's logo, the 'cube'. The design team creatively incorporated different aspects of the cube - its points, edges, faces, and outline - into various elements of the event. For instance, the intersecting edges of the cube were used to illustrate progress and opposition on stage, while a balanced cube, perched on one edge, served as an LED monument at the center of the main plaza, symbolizing harmony.

What set the design of the World Cyber Games 2019 apart was its emphasis on consistent communication. After a six-year hiatus, the event had evolved from a mere eSports tournament into a multifaceted event featuring user engagement programs, a music festival, and conferences. To ensure seamless integration of these diverse elements, the design team overhauled all design-related documentation, from brand identity to event design and operations.

Efficiency was at the heart of the event's realization. The design team meticulously planned every aspect of the event space, including pathways, stages, and facilities, to optimize flow. They adhered to a strategy of 'Choice and Focus', applying the most detail to spaces that received the most attention, thereby maximizing efficiency in costs and operations.

The event was held at the Xi’an Qujiang International Exhibition center, covering a total area of 30,000 sqm. The main stage measured 55,000mm in width, 11,000mm in depth, and 10,000mm in height, while the Centre Plaza was 10,000mm wide, 10,000mm deep, and 9,500mm high.

The design process involved extensive research, including site visits, gamer interviews, and simulations, to ensure maximum enjoyment for attendees. The design team faced the challenge of introducing a new World Cyber Games to viewers without erasing the fond memories of older fans. They addressed this by presenting a show match featuring veteran players from previous tournaments, while introducing new programs and designs.

The World Cyber Games 2019 Xi'an was a resounding success, earning the Golden A' Event and Happening Design Award in 2020. This award is granted to outstanding, trendsetting creations that reflect extraordinary excellence and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics. The event marked a triumphant return of the World Cyber Games after a six-year absence, showcasing not just a global eSports tournament, but also opening and closing ceremonies, an EDM festival, cosplay performances, an eSports conference, and even a TED talk.
